Es una central hidroel\u00e9ctrica pensada en 1904 por el ingeniero uruguayo V\u00edctor Sudriers, proyectada por el ingeniero alem\u00e1n Dr. Ing. Adolfo Lud\u00edn en 1933 e inaugurada el 21 de diciembre de 1945 y perteneciente a la empresa estatal de energ\u00eda de Uruguay, UTE. Su capacidad nominal es de 160 MVA. Se ubica en el curso del R\u00edo Negro, pocos kil\u00f3metros aguas arriba de Paso de los Toros, y su embalse es el de mayor capacidad en el pa\u00eds, tardando tres meses en disminuir desde su nivel m\u00e1ximo a su nivel m\u00ednimo operativo cuando est\u00e1n en funcionamiento las cuatro turbinas tipo Kaplan, cada una de las cuales es alimentada por una tuber\u00eda de 7 m de
